Congratulations to former Procopio litigator and current San Diego County Superior Court Judge Marsha Amin on her nomination by California Governor Gavin Newsom to serve as an Associate Justice in the Fourth District Court of Appeal, Division One. This is the latest honor for an attorney who has been a dedicated public servant for many years.
Judge Amin was a litigation attorney at Procopio from 2006 to 2010. She left Procopio to become an in-chambers attorney for the Fourth District Court of Appeal, later serving as a Senior Attorney before becoming Managing Attorney. She has been a Superior Court Judge since 2023.
Judge Amin earned a Master of Social Work from the University of Southern California and a J.D. from the University of San Diego School of Law, then served as a Law Clerk in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of California just prior to joining Procopio in 2006. She has also been a member of the Lawyers Club of San Diego since that time.
Judge Amin has been nominated to the Fourth District Court of Appeal to fill the vacancy left by the death of Justice Joan Irion. She awaits confirmation by the Commission on Judicial Appointments, which includes Chief Justice Patricia Guerrero, Attorney General Rob Bonta, and Senior Presiding Justice Manuel Ramirez.
Procopio has a long history of its attorneys going on to become distinguished judges. One of the firm’s four founding partners from 1946, Edward Schwartz, left the firm after about thirteen years to serve as a Municipal Court Judge. He was subsequently elevated to the Superior Court and later was appointed a U.S. District Court judge by President Lyndon Johnson. In 1969, Judge Schwartz was elevated to the position of Chief Judge of the United States District Court for the Southern District of California and served in that capacity until 1982 when he took Senior status, serving in that role until his death in 2000. He led the campaign to build a new Federal Courthouse and Federal building in San Diego. As a result, the Edward J. Schwartz Federal Building is named in his honor.
Procopio’s litigation attorneys represent businesses in California state and federal courts, arbitrations, mediations and administrative proceedings, bringing clarity and discipline to every phase of litigation.
