Procopio Pro Bono Counsel Helps the Tom Homann LGBT Law Foundation Achieve 501(c)(3) Tax-Exempt Status

August 8, 2016 (San Diego) _ Procopio is proud to represent the Tom Homann LGBT Law Association (THLA) in the formation of a new nonprofit, the Tom Homann LGBT Law Foundation (Foundation), and obtain the Foundation’s tax exemption under Internal Revenue Code Section 501(c)(3).  THLA is a law association dedicated to the advancement of gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender issues in California and the nation, and a platform for LGBT lawyers in San Diego to network, mentor law students, and develop their careers.

Procopio attorney Kevin Davis was elected to THLA’s Board of Directors in January 2014, and serves as its Chief Financial Officer.  As a 501(c)(3), the Foundation can collect tax-deductible donations that strengthen THLA’s service to the LGBT community through scholarships, mentorships, and networking opportunities.  For example, each spring THLA grants scholarships to law students at its annual dinner and awards ceremony.  “In previous years, our scholarship program was entirely supported by corporate sponsors, including Procopio, that each donated $1,000 towards a scholarship,” said Kevin Davis. “This year the Foundation was able to raise an additional $7,000 at the dinner, which we can use to expand our scholarship program next year.  We would not have achieved this without Procopio’s generous pro bono services.”

Procopio’s dedication to its pro bono offerings is a longstanding tradition of the firm, and lawyers are encouraged to support their community by serving individuals in need and nonprofit organizations with limited access to legal services.
