April 26, 2023 – Accomplished real estate and finance attorney David Crawford has joined Procopio as a Partner from Cooley LLP. He’s represented many clients in the life sciences, tech and other industries on a wide array of complex real estate and strategic joint venture transactions in the U.S. and globally. His legal services are so broad he likes to say he assists “anything connected to dirt, bricks and sticks.” David is based in Procopio’s downtown San Diego office.

“David is a perfect fit for Procopio,” said Managing Partner John D. Alessio. “He’s represented major companies in key sectors in complicated legal transactions at one of the largest law firms in the United States. Real estate law has been a core practice at Procopio since its founding, and we’re a leading law firm in the life sciences industry, so David provides perfect synergies across our many practices and sectors.”

David has represented over 150 life sciences companies, technology companies and venture investors in securing leases for new headquarters, GMP manufacturing facilities, laboratory space and other specialty spaces across the United States, including tenant-side representation of a life science company in securing the largest office/laboratory lease (by transaction amount) in San Diego history. His legal focus includes joint ventures, financing, development, construction, project finance, clean energy, leasing and regulatory issues, including licensing, RESPA, and fair housing. He represents individuals, startups and public companies in multiple industries including life sciences, tech, clean energy, aerospace, consumer products, hospitality, beverage, and retail, as well as portfolio companies and venture capitalists. David’s projects include leasing, development, construction, acquisition and dispositions of headquarters offices, manufacturing facilities, R&D labs, agricultural production facilities, hotels, distilleries and wineries, mixed-use developments and various other facilities. He facilitates real estate financing for both borrowers and lenders, including portfolio lending, construction loans, term facilities, re-financings and synthetic leases, as well as transactions with mixed collateral. David also negotiates feedstock, off-take, EPC and other agreements related to the development and financing of clean energy and manufacturing facilities.

“I am thrilled to join one of the most premier and robust real estate practices in Southern California and look forward to being part of a team of great lawyers and great people,” said David. “Procopio’s culture of excellence, client service, and innovation, and the firm’s leadership in the San Diego community, are a perfect match for my practice, as well as my values and goals. I look forward to working across a broad range of practices and industry types to serve clients from around the country and the world.”

David was a member of Cooley’s West Coast Real Estate practice based in San Diego for eight years, having joined it after practicing for several years with Davis Wright Tremaine LLP in Seattle, Washington. He earned his JD from the University of Washington School of Law in Seattle, was awarded the Order of the Coif, and graduated first in his class. He holds a Graduate Certificate in Real Estate Development from Portland State University and a BA from Reed College, both in Portland, Oregon. During his final year of law school David served as an Extern for the Honorable James L. Robart, a U.S. District Judge in the Western District of Washington.
