• Thinking of Using Independent Contractors? Watch Your Step – Employers in California are finding it increasingly difficult to classify workers as independent contractors rather than employees. The challenges began in 2018 with a state Supreme Court decision (Dynamex) that imposed a narrow test on how an employer can define an independent contractor. A 2019 Ninth Circuit decision found that the test can be applied retroactively. • A New California Privacy Law Goes into Effect in 2020: What You Need to Know Now – The California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) has the potential to be a game-changer for any company with customers in California. This sweeping new privacy legislation passed in 2018 but is still being amended. It goes into effect on January 1st, however, so it’s important to stay on top of developments now.
