Procopio Continues to Grow, Expands in Silicon Valley

11.26.2012

Menlo Park, CAProcopio, Cory, Hargreaves & Savitch LLP is at it again. The California Daily Journal recently ranked Procopio fourth among all California firms in terms of growth in 2012, with a 27.3% growth rate. And the firm recently earned the ranking as San Diego’s largest law firm, with over 130 attorneys.

Procopio now adds again to that number, announcing the addition of five new attorneys to their Silicon Valley office.

Leading the group is Miku H. Mehta, a partner on the intellectual property team. Mehta is accompanied by Francis G. Plati, Sr., who is joining the firm as senior counsel, Louis Diep, Ernest Huang, and Michael C. Jones, who are joining the firm as associates.

“Procopio’s ability to thrive and grow in these times is a testament to the strength of our business,” said Managing Partner Tom Turner. “We continue to climb the ranks as a leader in the legal industry, and we will continue to add experts in fields relevant to the needs of our client base.”

Mehta’s practice focuses on the preparation and prosecution of patent applications before the USPTO. He has also worked on due diligence projects, including preparation of opinions in the areas of patentability, validity, infringement, and product clearance, as well as patent licensing. Mehta’s areas of focus include the technology field such as computer software and hardware, networks, Internet-related application, environmental technologies, optics, mechanical engineering, business processes, and medical devices. Prior to joining Procopio, he was a partner at Sughrue Mion PLLC in Japan and Silicon Valley. Mehta earned his J.D. from the George Mason University School of Law.

Plati applies his extensive engineering background to practice in all areas of patent law, including counseling clients, litigation, licensing, and preparing and prosecuting application in technologies, including analog and digital communications, fiber optics, software, digital rights management, wireless communications, semiconductor devices, and automotive technologies including hybrid power systems, as well as other electrical and mechanical arts. He earned his J.D. from the University of New Hampshire School of Law.

Diep’s practice focuses on the preparation and prosecution of patent applications in the areas of computer, electrical, electronic, Internet-related technologies, mechanical arts, and software. He has experience preparing and prosecuting applications directed to client-server infrastructure, computer memory, database, Internet-related technologies, mechanical arts, multimedia software, semiconductor, and user interface. Diep has also assisted companies in the preparation and prosecution of trademark applications, software licensing, including open-source licenses and patent portfolio monetization. Prior to joining Procopio, Diep was an associate at Sughrue Mion PLLC and a patent examiner at the USPTO, where he examined patent applications in the Computer Architecture and Software Technology Center. He received his J.D. from Santa Clara Law.

Huang’s practice focuses on the preparation and prosecution of patent applications in a broad range of technology areas in the electrical, mechanical, and computer arts. He has experience prosecuting applications directed to semiconductor manufacturing and design, digital circuit design, connectors, PCB design, and storage media. Huang has also prosecuted applications in data storage and migration architectures, encryption schemes, various software algorithms and applications, and wireless transmission protocols. Prior to joining Procopio, he was an associate at Sughrue Mion PLLC. Huang earned his J.D. from the University of Toledo School of Law.

Jones prepares and prosecutes application relating to semi-conductor, electrical, and mechanical arts. Such work has included applications in the areas of display devices, medical imaging, image processing, tire technology, and sports equipment. Jones has experience prosecuting applications directed to network and database management software, network infrastructure, multimedia distribution systems, memory storage devices, data encryption/decryption, mobile communications, semi-conductor devices, and MEMS devices. He is also experienced with VoIP, GSM, IP Multicast, and GPS technologies. Jones earned his J.D. from DePaul University College of Law.

Earlier this year, Procopio was also ranked among national firms as number 50 on the Top Trademark Firm by Intellectual Property Today magazine. “With the addition of eight intellectual property attorneys in just the last six weeks, we have one of the largest, most sophisticated groups of intellectual property professionals in California,” said Kathleen Pasulka-Brown, a partner in Procopio’s Intellectual Property Group. “We are committed to improvement and look forward to moving further up the ranks next year.”
